You can visit Koh Lipe year round. The best time to visit Koh Lipe Island is during the dry season that runs from mid-October/November to May, but this is the busiest time and peak season with many visitors, so it may not be suitable for everyone. 

December, January and February and the height of the high season period, with many people. April brings holiday time too and can be a very hot and dry month, just before the rains come. June and July, through September and October, the rain can be monsoon-like and unpredictable during these months, bringing fewer people to the islands.

During the rainy season, starting the month of May to mid/late October, and sometimes into November, the weather is less stable with frequent rainfall. This is low season and some businesses and some hotels on the island close during this period too. If you are open to the rain or prefer a quieter atmosphere it may be more suitable to visit Koh Lipe during this quiet time – also called ‘green season’, when the rains bring even more lush vegetation and greener landscapes. During this time, the sun will shine too and there is always a warm and tropical feel.

What are the sea conditions like in Koh Lipe?

The waters are generally calm during the high season, which is typically from November to April. However, during the monsoon season, roughly May to mid-October, into November, the sea conditions affected by the weather can be choppier and less predictable. Koh Lipe does not have a port but a jetty for boats and ferries at Pattaya Beach, the main arrival and departure point at the northern end, called Bundhaya Pier.

Both speed boats and long-tail boats can drop people off at the other beaches, like Sunrise Beach on Koh Lipe. On the other beaches, boats can anchor offshore, as there is no port or pier, so you can disembark on the beach directly. The sand in your toes, and the crystal clear waters welcome your group as guests to the island!

How do I get to the surrounding islands from Koh Lipe?

A taxi boat is the best way to get around Koh Lipe and the surrounding islands. Varying from long-tails or speedboats, water taxis serve as the most popular means of transport between the main beaches and nearby islands. Used by visitors and locals alike for island hopping, visiting nearby snorkeling spots, and accessing the main beaches, small secret beaches and the more remote islands and beaches with fewer tourists, as well as the Tarutao Marine National Park.

How long does it take to get to Koh Lipe?

Koh Lipe by ferry is a combination of ferry trips – to Pak Bara Pier, Satun Province, on mainland Thailand, then on to Koh Lipe. This journey takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours travel time. There are a number of ferries going to Koh Lipe every day. Koh Lipe ferry operators, such as Tigerline Ferry, ferry times, ferry schedules, ferry tickets, combined tickets, and even a Koh Lipe map, are readily available. 

Ferries for Koh Lipe depart mainly from Rassada Pier, the most common ferry departure point for travelers heading to the island. The alternative for ferry journeys is Ao Makham.

What is the closest airport to Koh Lipe?

The closest airport to fly into for Koh Lipe is in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province. Hat Yai is the most accessible city and common gateway, with Pak Bara Pier generally being a 2 to 3-hour drive from Hat Yai Airport. Phuket International Airport is a journey of around 4 to 5 hours to Satun Province by car. Flights into Krabi Airport, and Krabi Town and Ao Nang (Krabi’s favorite beach) then on to Koh Lipe, which is a combination of ground transportation and ferry and will take approximately 3.5 to 5 hours. You can also get to Pak Bara from Trang Airport, then on to Koh Lipe by ferry or speedboat, taking 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. The most convenient and fastest way to travel from Bangkok to Hat Yai is by domestic flight.
